2006 (NON) PUPPY STATUS (duplicate of information posted 6/16/06 to the site homepage): Disappointing news, both for us and for those on our long waiting list. We've been waiting for Blanche to come into season since the early months of this year, but she has not obliged. She's always been irregular but John has been watching her like a hawk since March when she was due. She has either skipped a cycle, or is just on such a non-standard calendar that it's too late now for 2006. We're past the point where we can plan for a fall litter, when we have a lot of non-beagle commitments on our time. The pups wouldn't be ready for pickup until Halloween even if Blanche was in heat today, and that just doesn't work for us with Penn State football games and other things going on. This is just a hobby for us, and we never have planned our lives around the production of puppies, but only made them available when we had them. We do plan on emailing those people already on the list, but we're sorry to say that not only are we not taking any more names for the foreseeable future, but we're not going to have any puppies this year either. We'll be making some changes on the website to reflect this (we're getting ready to have new windows installed on our house, so things are busier than usual right now), but in the meantime please do not telephone or email us to ask about puppies, because we just don't have any. We won't be answering any new puppy inquiries, now that we have this news posted on the website. Again, our most sincere apologies, but Mother Nature has trumped us for this year.

PLANS FOR THE REMAINDER OF 2005 AND INTO 2006: We will not be having a Fall 2005 litter, since Blanche is our only breeding female right now. Our aim is to breed her again in the first quarter of 2006. The puppies will probably whelp a bit farther into 2006 than they did this year (mid-March). We'll post a sire when we have determined who it will be. We also hope to get a new female pup at BEB in 2005, so in a couple more years we may be able to have two litters per year. We'll have to wait and see on that, as John will not breed a gyp that isn't up to his standards as a hunter, and that can take a while to determine properly, while we wait till she's old enough to breed .

SPRING 2005 LITTER: Blanche (Lehner's Blanchepatch) and Jack Pach Brumbaugh, featured on our Other Dogs front page, are the parents of our latest litter, six puppies (3 male, 3 female), born on St. Patrick's Day, March 17. Here is our pedigree file for the litter (15KB PDF), showing 5 generations. Photos for this litter will be posted as slideshows on the Flash Gallery page, as they grow from birth to 8 weeks prior to pickup by their owners.

COST: The price for a pup from the Spring 2005 litter was $250, for either gender. We sometimes vary the price a bit based on the specific cross, but this is a good figure to use in general, and we won't go above it without advance notice. The price for a litter will be posted on this page at the time the breeding is announced.

The BEB Puppy List

Over the years that we've been breeding Patch puppies, we've evolved a procedure for reserving and selling them which works for us and for our buyers. We usually have many more people on the list than a litter will provide pups for, and this is the fairest method we've come up with.

We're always happy to add new names to the puppy list, as long as you understand that your wait CAN be a year or more. If you will accept a male puppy, you might move up faster than the folks who want females only. But our best advice is simply not to give up hope no matter what your list position or desired gender is. Not everyone who is high on the list says yes to their puppy at whelping time, and some who are low on the list end up with a dog. This fact was confirmed again with the Spring '05 litter, due to a few refusals, a bunch of postponements, and even a cancellation within the first week. If you want to maximize your odds and minimize your wait, try to let as much time as possible pass after the whelping date - at least a couple of weeks until the deposit checks are all in - before you make any other firm plans. Anything can happen.

One reason we have this bit of uncertainty at whelping time is because there is no obligation to be added to our list. You don't make any financial commitment until you are promised a puppy after its birth, at which time you send in your nonrefundable $100 deposit. You can remove yourself from the list at any time, should you change your mind or obtain a pup elsewhere before you are offered one of ours. All we ask is that you let us know if you decide that you don't want one of our dogs, so that we don't spend time trying to contact you only to have you say you lost interest six months earlier. And we ask that you keep your contact information accurate, so that we don't have trouble reaching you when we start trying.

NEW LIST ADDITIONS: At the time you wish to be added to the list, we need all of the following information:

  • Your full name
  • Complete mailing address
  • Phone number (your primary number whether landline or cell; others are optional)
  • Email address if you have one, and how regularly you check it, so we know whether we can use email as a useful contact method or not.
  • The number of puppies you are interested in. We only sell more than one pup per litter to a buyer if there is no one else on the list who wants a pup from that litter - but let us know anyway if you would like more than one, because sometimes it works out.
  • Your preference for gender, and whether or not the other gender is acceptable. This is not binding, but it helps us get a handle on demand for males vs. females. You get the choice of whatever's left when your spot on the list comes up, and you make your final decision as to gender at that time only.
  • Your preference for litter season (fall, spring, or either). This isn't relevant now while we're only breeding one female per year in the spring only, but by the time new list additions get to the top, we might be doing more than one litter.

The date you're added to the list is recorded, because the list is first-come-first-served. You will receive a confirmation email from us when you have been added. Our homepage will keep everyone informed of our efforts and timing on breeding and litters. If you're on the list, all you need to do is check for breeding reports, and email or call us if you want to know where you stand on the list at any time. We do not post the list publicly, to protect the privacy of those on it.

KEEPING YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION UP-TO-DATE: It is your responsibility to keep BEB current with your contact information, and to stay updated on our breeding status by checking the website or giving us a call once or twice a year. If we can't reach you by phone or email within a couple of days from the time we start trying, we have to assume you are no longer interested. It's up to you to know when we have litters in the works - this information will always be kept current here on the BEB website. You may call or email us at any time, to ask us your list position or anything else concerning our puppies or breeding.

WHEN A LITTER WHELPS: When our pups arrive, we wait for 3 days to make sure they're all are healthy. Then we post the birth announcement on our homepage, and start making phonecalls to the names on top of the list. We work our way down in order to get commitments, until all the pups are spoken for. If your desired gender runs out ahead of your place on the list, you have the option of choosing a pup of the other gender or no pup at all. In the latter case you can opt to be kept at the top of the list for the next litter, with no postponement penalty.

POSTPONEMENTS: If we do have a pup of your desired gender but you wish to postpone until the next litter, we allow this one time without giving up your spot on the list. A second refusal to an offered pup will require that you drop to the bottom of the list or off of it entirely, as you prefer. We're starting this policy as of the Spring 2005 litter because of the increasing size of our list compared to the small number of puppies we have to sell each year.

DEPOSITS: At the time when your pup is confirmed, we require a $100 deposit (credited against its full cost), which must be received within 10 days of the confirmation phone call. Once we've agreed to promise you a pup and we receive your deposit, it is not refundable if you change your mind. We've instituted this policy because in the past some people have committed to pups, requiring us to turn down others - then 8 weeks later they've backed out when it was time to pick up their pup. The folks we turned down had made other arrangements by then, and so we were left with unsold pups. We have a very small kennel, usually only 5 or 6 adults, and keeping unsold puppies can be difficult for us. We only breed our dogs when we know we have enough people who want the whole litter. With this deposit system, we don't have to disappoint nearly as many folks, and we're assured that the people who are promised pups really are going to become their owners. It is not done for any financial reason.

PICKUPS: When the puppies are 8 weeks of age, they're ready to be sold. We do not air-ship, so you've got to make it to Tyrone PA to pick up your pup (see the Kennel Information page, or the directions we provide by mail after receiving your deposit). We allow a two-week window, from the 8-week date to the 10-week date, so that you have the ability to schedule your trip or to make arrangements for someone to pick your pup up for you. Third-party pickup arrangements must be approved in advance by us, so that we know who's coming to get your dog, when, and how the dog will be cared for in transit. At the time of pickup, the balance of the cost is due. You get to choose from all the remaining pups of your promised gender, so it's to your advantage to be here as soon as possible after the pickup period begins. If you'd like to visit the BEB kennel at the Lehner family farm in Bald Eagle (5 miles north of Tyrone PA), let us know and we'll be happy to show you around, since the puppies normally stay 'in town' with us at our home. We can also help make any overnight arrangements that might be necessary.

MEDICAL RECORDS: We provide a complete record of shots and wormings given up to the date of pickup, and the pups have had their dewclaws removed. The pup's health is guaranteed by us as per the dog purchaser protection statute of the state of PA, which we provide in document form also. We register the litter with the AKC, and give you the form to send in with payment to register your pup with the name you choose. You can also register your pup online once you have the litter form. If you're interested in naming your pup to reflect its origin at Bald Eagle Beagles, we offer some suggestions and incentives for doing this on our Naming Information page.

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT PUPPY PICKUP: If you do not pick up your pup by the end of week 10, we reserve the right to charge for additional boarding; at the end of week 12 (a month after the pickup period began), you forfeit your prepayment and we will attempt to find another buyer. Our entire policy has been set up because we want to avoid the disappointment (at both ends) of no-shows. If there's an emergency or some other unforeseen problem, let us know right away so we can do our best to work something out. We know you've waited a long time for your BEB puppy, and we really want you to get it.
